Pastor's Message
Now I know someone is saying to themselves, "that sounds good, but we are in the midst of a recession and I am struggling myself." I understand that and that is so very real. But it's also a perfect time to give. In fact, the Lord wants to see where your heart is, even in the midst of these troubling times. Like the woman who gave all that she had, the Lord will reward your faith. In fact, the word says, "Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." I don’t know who it is, but make up in your mind to be a blessing to at least one person this month. Be a giver instead of a taker and watch God change things. May God’s Blessings continue to be upon ALL of you during this Holiday Season. Because He Lives, Pastor Kevin E. Donalson, Sr. MISSION STATEMENT We seek to make effective disciples in the Kingdom of God (Ministry) by reaching people where they are and bringing them to Christ (Outreach) so that their lives are built up and transformed (Victorious Living) by the awesome power of God's word (Education). Believing that because the Lord is her shepherd, she shall not want (Psalm 23), Mrs. Burton joined Zion Baptist Church as a teenager and has continued worshipping and serving here for almost 60 years. She is described by many as the friendly woman with the beautiful smile who is always ready to lend a helping hand. The mother of six children and the “MeMa” to ten grandchildren and one great grandchild, Mrs. Burton was married to the late Hilery Burton, Sr., for 54 years. She enjoys playing Scrabble with her children (especially when she wins), visiting friends, shopping, and cooking. She believes that “you can never do a kind deed too soon because you never know when too soon will be too late!” Upcoming Events December 5-7 — Gethsemane Youth Revival December 7 — Pearl Harbor Memorial Day December 8 & 15 — Take 5 to Stay Alive Diabetes & Prostate Screenings, Palmetto Health Office of Community Services, 1501 Sumter St (Basement) 11a.m.-1 p.m. December 10 — Real Men Prostate Screenings, Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St. (Ground-Floor Auditorium) 10a.m.-2 p.m. December 18 — ZBC Annual Christmas Program, Zion Baptist Church, 5:00 p.m. December 22 — First Day of Winter December 25 — Christmas Day December 26 — Kwanzaa Begins December 29 — The Whole Truth About Whole Grains/Fiber Facts, Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St (Ground-Floor Auditorium) 6-7 p.m. December 31 — Watch Night Worship Service, Zion Baptist Church, 8-10 p.m., Guest Speaker: Rev. Michael Ross, Pastor of New Ebenezer Baptist Church Remembering Fred Shuttlesworth
On October 5, we also heard about the passing of one of the pioneers of the civil rights movement, Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, who was also one of the greatest minds of the 20th century. His contributions will also be chronicled in the pages of history as someone who helped to reshape society and the world. Once deemed, "the man most feared by Bull Conners and other southern racists," Shuttlesworth's contributions to social change are too numerous to mention. Like Fannie Lou Hamer, Martin Luther King, Jr., Medgar Evers, and so many others, Shuttlesworth was a visionary. His was unwavering in his stance on changing a segregated society. While watching TV news, I watched as countless reporters commented about the passing of Steve Jobs. There was only one mention I heard/saw regarding the passing of Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth. While we celebrate the life and great work of Steve Jobs, we must also celebrate the life of Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth. We must forever teach and share about our history with the next generation.
IN MEMORIAM Mrs. Mary Portee Nixon Family and Friends Day Zion’s annual Family and Friends Day Worship Service was held on November 20, 2011. The program was extremely spirit-filled which included a beautiful interpretive dance routine by Ms. Danielle Conyers. Zion’s Mass choir blessed us with wonderful selections, which left many in the congregation with spirit-filled hearts. We were then blessed with a powerful message from Rev. Dr. Louis McDowell, from Passaic, New Jersey. His message came from Mark 2:1-5 entitled "When God Is In the House." Rev. McDowell not only blessed us with a powerful message but he also blessed us with his wonderful singing. We truly had a spirit-filled and blessed Sunday Morning Worship Service which was shared with numerous families and friends. After we had our souls spiritually fed, we were treated to a delicious dinner in the fellowship hall. Thanks to ALL who worked so hard to make this Family and Friends day a truly enjoyable one.
